Ansonia, in southwestern CT, was founded on land originally part of Derby and called the Little Neck. The Neck is formed by the Naugatuck River and Beaver Brook. Thomas Wooster first settled here in 1654 to raise hops for the brewery in Milford, CT. Its South part was called Plum Meadow and its upper part the North End. Industrialist, Anson G. Phelps conceived of using the waters of the Naugatuck for manufacturing and began acquiring the land in 1836 intending to extend the city of Birmingham. In 1884 his company, Phelps, Dodge and Co. established Ansonia as a manufacturing center. The town was separated from Derby in 1889. Town vital records begin in 1889.
