History
Brief: |
Five veterans of the King Phillips War were granted 100 acres each at Pequot (New London) but the land was already taken. On 15 May 1651, the Court decided to lay out to them land in Nianticutt. Settlement began in the Niantick Quarter, that is now the southeastern part of East Lyme, organized and named in 1667. A Society was authorized in October 1719 and in 1839 East Lyme was incorporated as an independent town on land taken from the towns of Lyme and Waterford. Town vital records begin 1839. Barbour collection records cover 1839-53. |
