History
Brief: |
The first settler in this area was a freed slave named Toby who purchased a large tract from the Paugasuck Indians in 1693 for a barrel of cider and ten pounds. The name Beacon Falls was in use locally since 1856 and refers to the falls in the Naugatuck River between Beacon Mountain and Tobys Neck. The General Assembly designated Beacon Falls a town in May 1871, taking land from Bethany, Naugatuck, Oxford and Seymour. Town vital records begin 1871. Earlier records are in the four towns named.
